If a product is competitive then Affiliates could be attracted by adding amount to their commissions rather paying to Networks. I heard CJ and linkshare charge around 20%.
I think it will work best with e-books or where no. of products are less than 10. Moreover it does not require regular updates.
For merchants with big product lists (datafeeds) it may go into a dedicated resource(s) to manage inventory (special offers, event based offers, coupons etc.) and delivering payments. Yet it cannot be compared with increasing Affiliate loyalty by increasing profit.

A negative could be developing Credibility. Usually Affiliate sign up by reading reviews---Replying, Affiliate Support, Timely Payments, creative inventory, Accurate Reporting etc. For a new player it will be time taking.

hey Johnty you we're working late :)

Affiliates are found in all works of life, from ebook sellers, to directories so I guess its feasible to do this with blogs, of course the problem as you say would being able to provide a measurable goal which I'm not sure you could set, maybe subscribers to an email list, though you would need to figure out a way to only payout after a set period of time on the list.

Great article could this work with any business type, I mean you mention tight profit margin but perhaps it would make a good incentive for bloggers?
I mean offer maybe a small amount for each subscriber an affiliate brings not sure how you would monitor it though
